About South Point School | BALLYGUNGE PLACE | BALLYGUNGE PLACE | KOLKATA
Kolkata on 1 April 1954 was, well, a quite different city. The Independence of the country was only seven years old. India was practically reborn and so were its cities. Kolkata, still, had much more green and open expanses of land. Its southern parts were sparsely populated and this cozy community was waiting for an educational institution where learning and growing up would happen in a happy and innovative environment. A new nest that would teach their little ones to fly on confident wings.
South Point School, an English-medium and co-educational school, opening its gates at 16 Mandeville Gardens on 1 April 1954, was an answer to the community’s prayers.
It captured the popular imagination since the moment of its foundation. Shri Satikanta Guha and Smt. Pritylata Guha, Founder and Associate Founder of the School, nurtured earliest Pointers – just twenty in number — with an inspired mix of love, care and utmost responsibility. To help the Founders fulfil their vision and mission was a handful of dedicated teachers. And, the initial faculty was an enviable collection of stalwarts from the cultural, literary and artistic milieu of Bengal. Their genius improved manifold the ambience of creative purposefulness so that every child who crossed the gates of the early, quaint bungalow knew his or her potential would never be left unfulfilled.
The School which had welcomed twenty children in a distant summer has spread its rainbow wings in much the same way as its students have. The journey, taken since 1954, has been a magical one, marked by splendid milestones. The comely bungalow soon grew into newer, bigger buildings so that it could bring more and more children into its fold. The early faculty handed the batons over to a burgeoning number of teachers who were equally committed and fully trained to keep up with the changing times. South Point High School was the first co-educational School in the city to be affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. The first School Final batch was sent up in 1958.
April seems to be the happiest month in the evolution of South Point. On another 1 April – this time in 1960 – it was upgraded to the Higher Secondary level. The High School found a new, and the present, premises on 8 April 1970 at 82/7A Ballygunge Place. The School is now run by the South Point Education Society.
The growing family of South Point has the rare distinction of winning a place in the Guinness Book of Records (1984-1992) as the world’s largest School.
A persistent commitment to excellence, success, hard work, compassion, a collaborative atmosphere and brave technological strides is a tough job but the large South Point family – now consisting of nearly 12,000 students, 475 teachers and 259 non-teaching staff-members – carries it on tirelessly every day. The huge team of students and staff is not a deterrent; it just means more minds, more hands and more hearts to plant and rear saplings of excellence in every classroom of South Point.
Education at South Point is a delightful pool of academics, assessments, co-curricular activities, fests, sports, celebrations, excursions and a seamless interaction among the faculty, the pupils and the guardians. The goal is actually to inspire Pointers to strive beyond goals; a look at the South Point alumni proves the point. Former Pointers straddle the spheres of scholarship and films; of music and public administration; of science and medicine; of literature, journalism, corporate houses and sports with exceptional ease.

"This school is very bad . It keeps the students in great pressure . Ultimately few students can work in big companies . My son studied in this school and now (25 years old) he does only a job of RS. 900 per month.
So I would recommend you to choose another school ."
K S RAVI SHANKAR (KSR) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"I passed out nearly 50 years ago. The last batch of Higher Secondary in ‘75. We had over 8,000 students even then. But every teacher knew us by name - gave us positive practical gyan, counselled our parents on allowing us to do more than academics; I owe everything to my Alma Mater. We had friends from across Commerce Arts and Science as the groupings were then. Some of us spent 11 years or more in each other’s company than with our families. We had fun, we competed healthy, we fought and we danced;
We were taught to see the people as equals - we had classmates from almost all over India; from across different socio economic backgrounds; with great or little educational pedigree - none of it mattered - for the school and the teachers and therefore it made us truly Global Indian - we knew not then - but realise its value now! Every day. We ate everybody’s tiffin - we stole some and bought some; but we shared everything; this school has given economic scholarships / fee reductions & exemptions to many students in my time.
Encouraged seniors to donate their books to juniors who may not always be able to afford it. Life’s lessons well taught!
Many from SPHS have made it big in all walks of life across the world; but all of us have made our parents and our children proud.
We hope we have made our school proud!
My younger brother studied in SPHS; 20 years after passing out and leaving the city, me and my wife went to live for a year in Kolkata so that our son can experience a year at the school.
Almost all of my teachers and some of my seniors, classmates & those a few years jr have passed away. The trams have disappeared from my beloved Calcutta; Calcutta became Kolkata; names have changed; But the memory of my days in school remains sharp and etched.
Many of us are bound by the friendships we made then & it lasts strong even today.
Some of our school mates are life mates.
Our teachers taught us to believe in ourselves! taught us that life is a mixed bag and made us winners -to win gracefully & lose with equanimity. Merit was always the final criteria.
learners (like me) were given a hand to cope up.
I can go on!
I am raring to meet nearly a 100 of our classmates from 1975 batch in Jan2025 for our 50th pass out anniversary reunion - in Kolkata - from across the seas and lands - we are coming back home 2B together.
That is the emotion this school is for all of us - not just nostalgia but gratitude and a lifetime of learning.
If you are a Kolkatan and missed being a South Pointer - make sure your child or your grand kids can get an option to experience the legend of South Point!"
Sanjay Biswas ⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Attended the school for a few years. Quality school even in kindergarten they had quality and academic rigor."
Radhe Techz ⭐
"Worst school ever, never go to this school, there is no injustice between students.....always the wrong person gets punishment.....my friend's session was changed due to some fight issue where the other person wasn't even punished.....if u want ur ward safe then don't admit ur ward here"
Dipankar Dhar ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"My son is an ex pointer of this school.. this school has given my son a very good environment to study, friend circle and good teachers .. it is one of the best schools in Kolkata never matter ..
Although there is a catch here. There are cases of bullies and ragging in this school Often students face mental problems like depression and anxiety because this institution gives a lot of pressure on students through academics . The admission test of class 11 for the science stream is conducted in pcm subject and believe me it is the next jee advanced paper after IIT. Sphs sets that level of question for admission of internal students in class 11.
Don't be afraid . If you are planning your son / daughter to study in this school then I would recommend it . I can promise that this school will groom your child perfectly in science, maths and English that his/her basics in the subjects will be very strong ."
